The Department of Transportation (DOT) regulates transportation industries such as trucking, buses, pipelines, and airlines.  As part of these regulations, the DOT oversees the testing and treatment of employees in these industries who may have substance abuse problems.  The DOT’s SAP Program for Truck Drivers (SAPT) is one such program.  The SAPT is a voluntary program that truck drivers can participate in if they have a substance abuse problem. Although drugged driving is a problem that crosses all demographics, it has been shown to be especially prevalent among truck drivers. According to a report by the Department of Transportation, the percentage of truck drivers who tested positive for drugs has increased steadily over the past decade. In 2010, 10.6 percent of truck drivers who were tested positive for drugs. By 2016, that number had risen to 15 percent.

SAP Evaluation is a process that evaluates the severity of substance abuse. It is done by assessing the individual’s alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. The process of substance abuse evaluation includes an assessment of the individual’s alcohol and tobacco use as well as their drug use. This assessment is done through a series of questions that are designed to measure the severity of their addiction to these substances.
